My my, I'm a little upset presently as I just finished writing this review only to lose it all on almost the last click! I shall try again ...

Review is with a few drops of water. Also worth noting that this sample has been in and out of its bottle a couple of times due to an off-palate and bad timing.

Nose - a soap/cardboard note dominates the nose. Then some sweet red fruits sit atop a mild and ashy peat base. Lightly smoked strawberries, perhaps? Then some coastal notes of dry seaweed and salinity.

Taste - more berry sweetness upfront (PX casks in the mix?) Then ashy, drying peat. Some orange peel too.

Finish - med. Strawberry syrup, ashy peat and bitter, drying tannins.

I enjoyed this more on my first sip but not so much now. That soapy, cardboard note dominates. It reminds me of a long opened Jura - perhaps the extra air exposure didn't help much, who knows? The finish is also too bitter for my tastes yet the coastal notes are quite nice. This is what's great about samples though, you get to try things you otherwise wouldn't. Sometimes it's a hit, others a swing and a miss, this, unfortunately, is in the latter.

@RianC thanks for your review. Any info on length of aging? Is this a travel retail, a one-off special release or...something else?

@Victor - apologies. I had noted that it was a travel exclusive and 15 years old on my initial review but forgot to add it second time around. I think they only come in 1ltr bottles too.

@RianC thanks very much for the info. Sounds like this one is a sort of minor batch for travel retail of the old Bowmore 15 Darkest. And not one of the better batches of Bowmore 15 Darkest either. Odd and outlier batches is where travel retail gets its goods. Whether those batches are experienced as enjoyable and of being of good quality is highly subjective of course. Some whisky aficionados do indeed appreciate batches which others would consider odd and "off".
