700ml bottles in the US

Hi,

I've started a petition on We the People to get a response from the White House as to why 700ml bottles (and other sizes) cannot be imported for sale into the US. To get a response from the White House, 25,000 signatures are needed by Feb. 8, 2013. If 25,000 will sign a petition asking the US to build a Death Star (I am not making this up), I'm hoping to get 25,000 whisky drinkers to sign about opening up the import market to other bottle sizes. Please sign the petition here: wh.gov/PyJa

and share, forward, and other promote this to get the signatures needed to get a response.

Thanks!

Why? I don't mean to sound rude… but why does it matter? I agree it is odd that in Europe the bottles are 700ml and in the states it is 750ml… but I don't think it matters all that much either way that we have an extra 50ml…. I just think that sending in a petition to the White House is a bit extreme for something that, while puzzling, is entirely trivial (in my opinion).

It's because companies cannot import whisky into the US unless they re bottle them as 750ml...this is a considerable expense and many limited bottlings are just not available in the USA as a result.

@cpstecroix Just watch, the government will price the 700ml bottles the same as the 750ml bottles, like they do in Ontario, lol.

@OCeallaigh -- Because there is so much out there in the world that we do not see in the United States because of protectionist bottling laws. Wouldn't you love to have access to all whiskies, not just the ones that are bottled for the American market?

@OCeallaigh Gotta agree with ya 100% (not sure why some here would neg ya?)...IMHO 750 ml > 700 ml (I mean - who doesn't want an additional 50 ml of a quality product?).....Also some N.American bottlings are higher abv as well.....What's not to like?

@Mantisking Forgive my ignorance, but I find that there's alot of stuff in any quality liquor store here in the greater Milwaukee area...There's also winesearcher.com

@FMichael The point is that there are things that are only bottled in 700ml bottles that aren't imported for sale in the US and, in some cases, it isn't worth it for those distilleries to make 750ml bottles just for the US market. If 700ml bottles could be imported for sale into the US, we would have even more choices available to us.

@jmcwhisky Well - personally I feel we folks here in the good ole US of A have a lot to pick, and choose from...As I've already pointed out - wine searcher, and Merwins have alot to offer if you're looking for that hard to find bottle...There's also Master of Malts, and Royal Mile Whiskies for online purchases.

Neg away.

@FMichael -- You do realize that it is illegal in certain states to use those services you've listed to import liquor into the state.

@Mantisking Yes - I am aware of that...Shall we start another petition?

@FMichael Solid witticism.

@FMichael -- Sure. But let's deal with the easier issue of bottle size before we move on to the more arcane and obtuse liquor laws of the nation.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks as though shipments from the UK cannot be made to the USA from if you were to purchase from the Master of Malts.

Actually - a thread was already started connosr.com/wall/discussion/…
