A.D. Rattray (formerly Dewar Rattray, which in the case of Aberfeldy, could become quite confusing) bottled this Aberfeldy from 1994 at cask strength.
The nose is very fruity on coconut, pineapple and oranges. Touch of leather as well. But most of all: nuts. Hints of marzipan. And something dusty, as if I am sitting in the attic. Toasted oak. Nice. Adding water makes it sweeter and brings out the oranges. Evolves towards a slightly bitter orange marmalade.
It is pretty oily and fruity on the palate. The marzipan returns, as do the oranges Pears join in. Midpalate, it becomes very spicy. Think nutmeg, white pepper, ginger and liquorice. It does not need water, but can take it very well.
A small bitterness from the wood appears in the lingering and spicy finish.
Very elegant malt, that easily surpasses the official bottlings and is a swimmer too. Around 60 EUR. Bang for your buck!
