I'm getting ready to join the SMWS myself so I haven't bought any bottles yet, but I know my wife and I prefer the speysides for the most part with the occasional Island or Highland thrown in. I gotta be honest I look at what the tasting panel says about the whisky and then the price tag and go from there.

The samples I got when I joined were all pretty good so feel confident I'm going to like whatever I order...just a bit more nerve wracking if you're considering spending £100+ on a bottle!

I've purchased quite a few bottles from the society over the past 4years and I've only purchased one bottle that I regret buying. I am fortunate that I am able to attend society tastings twice a year and I usually find one or two bottles that I "have" to buy after trying them at the event. For ones that I haven't tasted before I buy, I usually go with distilleries that I like. I read the tasting notes, check the price and finally, I talk it over with my wife, as well as my brother-in-law and father-in-law, who are also members. That method has served me well. :-)

I've recently joined the SMWS. Just bought my first two bottles and I have to admit that, without having had a chance to go to any of their venues or read any reviews, I made my choice mainly by deciphering the distillery numbers...and I know that this is what they want to discourage!! What do other people do?
