@mikelrtx, all I can say is BUY, BUY, BUY! The Airigh is wonderful, (now) rare, discontinued, and a steal at $50 a bottle.

Definitely buy if you can. I've heard nothing but good things, and it's almost $90 around here so I think you'd be getting a great deal.

@mikelrtx Pity that you are in Texas. Otherwise I would have asked you to buy two bottles for me!

It's my favorite Ardbeg, usually selling (when available) at way over $100. At $50, it's a steal. BUY, BUY, BUY !

I have one and it is very good... it is like having peated ice cream... sounds odd, but it is wonderful in the glass... BUY it.. it is sold out in most of the great whisky shops in UK. I found it in New Jersey a few months ago for 62$, but is was a deal as a it is normally sold above 100$. It is a 1990 vintage. There have been three bottlings, 2006, 2007 and 2008. There is a code under the bottle. L6, L7 or L8... so you know how old is your. I have the L8, which means 18 yo

I see Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist is officially "discontinued". Damn shame as it's truly a magnificent whisky, the likes we'll never see again. I hope you bought two, drank one and set the second aside for a distant future rainy day..

I wish I had. I'm half way into mine and finding it hard to leave it alone. Supposedly Corryvreckan is the replacement. Have not tried it yet but it sounds like a completely different animal to me--much younger and cask strength.

One can still find the Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist in some of the Asian airports' Duty Free shops. In particular, Seoul (Incheon) had a nice stock last time I was there (at about U$ 150 a bottle, which probably explains why it's still available ;-)

That's funny, @olivier! Everywhere else that I've seen, it's been steeply discounted.

@dbk The Seoul (ICN) duty free has a nice range, but it is not the place to save money. Just a nice place to kill time and have a very nice offering.

$50 is excellent for that bottle (same price as the 10 Year Old)! A rather elegant Islay bottling. After last falls price cut in the states, you can get a bottle for under $100 (~$93.00).

@MagneticField Check my tasting notes and comparison here: whiskynotes.be/2009/ardbeg/…

@MagneticField: Corryvreckan is like a cask-strength version of the 10 Year with added hints of chocolate, peat, citrus, etc. Airigh Nam Beist is much more tame, but also more elegant (lighter peat, marshmallow, white chocolate, etc). I would compare it to the Ardbeg 17 Year. It's not weak by any means, but it's not even close to the Corryvreckan for complexity or power (IMO).

@rwbenjey & @WhiskyNotes,
Thanks to you both. My bottle of Corry is almost empty now, but I found myself in a love/hate relationship with it. Some days I would really love it, and others I felt it was just a mouthful of burning fire. I've started adding just a tad more water and it really brings out the sweeter notes. Might have to try the Beist.

Today at work we had a few bottles of the Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist shipped from our warehouse. With our discount it's at a very reasonable price (around $50) and I thought about grabbing a bottle. Problem is I've never really heard anything about it. Was this a limited release? Is it worth the price? Should I get it?
I've had and rather enjoyed other Islay scotches. Laphroaig 10, Bunnahabhain 12 and 25, but I've never had the opportunity to try any of Ardbeg's other offerings.
