To celebrate the Speyside festival we have a new tasting: hidden gems of speyside. We chose Gordon & Macphails 1997 Connoisseurs Choice for our second whisky. Aultmore, near the Speyside town of Keith and named after the nearby Burn of Auchinderran , are part of the John Dewar group, who are in turn owned by Bacardi. There is no official current single malt release; the 3 million litre capacity goes into Dewar’s blends.
Pats notes: Nose: Tangerines, toffee, grapes, mango with oak lurking way off in the distance. Eventually, a strong hit of honey and lemon cough sweets.
Taste: Initially, light and creamy sherry with some fairly sappy and heavy oak spice, gradually replaced by honey and a lighter tingly spice with vanilla ice cream on the finish.

This is definitely a hidden gem of Speyside! My first dram from the bottle was good. I revisited the following days, and needless to say I was very impressed. This is an easy to drink malt, which is nicely rounded out! I too noticed the oak more as I drank more. I am over halfway done my bottle and I just opened it less than a week ago!
