This Balblair was one of the discoveries during the Christmas Tasting last year, lead by Michiel Wigman and Jeroen Koetsier. I loved it and left a bit of my sample to retry in the tranquility of my study. Today is the day. By the way: the malt has spent more time in the bottle than it ever did on a cask. Moreover, it was bottled in 1992 which is also almost two decades ago. Boy, how time flies.
Divine and waxy nose on forest fruit, marzipan, tobacco, honey, peach, roasted hazelnuts, raisins, wet moss and varnish. Very layered and complex.
Silky soft. I am immediately reminded of the forest again, but after a heavy shower. Then all kinds of fruit with apples and raisins in the lead, followed by honey and toffee, dried apricots and gooseberries, while a soft spiciness gives it some weight and some mint offers a fresh lift. Lemonade from a diamond cup.
Long and lovely finish on aniseed and toffee with just a bit of whispering oak at the death. Class!
Well, there’s nothing I can taste after this today, now is there. Session over.
