Distribution of ratings for this:
Benchmark Old No. 8 is from in Buffalo Trace distillery. It has a small reputation as a "bang for the buck" bourbon. Well, at least Ralfy liked it and it did win Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge.
For my taste, Benchmark 8 is just a everyday, household dram. A bit too one sided and too much dryness for me. But a good one, when thinking about the price: I got it for 18 euros!
On that note, Benchmark Old No, 8 is something decent from a great distillery. Dram that isn't in every store shelf and you'll get it from the discount basket. Like Super 8 by J.J. Abrams and Spielberg. No-one hardly knows it but it's worth a try.
With rye, wheat and malted barley, it has over 50% corn, which really shows.
Nose: Corn with soft honey and some sweet, fruity notes.
Taste: Dry leather with fruits on the background.
Finish: Corn attacks very strongly, oak and dry fruits.
Balance: Robust and sour bourbon. Has gotten much higher scores than I gave it, so for the price, try it.
