When this malt was first released, it set you back some 500 EUR. Today, add at least 50%. So you can imagine I was quite happy that my buddy Manny offered me a sample of this fantastic Benromach. It’s not only my 20th to taste from this distillery – which I visited in 2010 – but also the oldest (in terms of maturation). This is going to be a feast, I’m sure.
OMG, wonderfully soft and fruity nose on red fruit, honey blossoms, polished leather, antique furniture, marzipan, roasted hazelnuts, origin chocolate with pieces of candied oranges and toasted oak. I laughed out loud in joy when I put my nose in the glass.
The body may be a bit light, but the taste is great. Red but also candied fruit, good spices from the oak and even some woodsmoke, blood oranges with peel, vanilla and cloves. Keeps the mouth nicely warm and comes in waves. Yes, this is amazing and complex.
How nice that this also offers a long, warm and delicious finish that makes me go ‘ooh’ en ‘aah’. It’s like a little angel weeing on my tongue. Remains spicy though with a small bitterness at the death. Must be an angel with kidney stones (note to self: seriously?).
This Benromach is close to perfection. Great class. Thx, Manny!
