Lovers of Big Peat are legion. Collectors too, and they may gradually get gray hair, because there are now so many (regional) editions that it is hard to keep up. Invariably, Douglas Laing also launches a Christmas Edition of their bestseller. To repeat for those who would have forgotten: Big Peat is a blended malt with only Islay whiskies, including Bowmore, Coal Ila, Ardbeg and... Port Ellen. Sturdy nose on raw grain, straw and olives. Smells very young, but it tolerates it well. A diesel engine and some sauerkraut precede white fish and a drop of lemon juice. For the time being, hardly any smoke or peat. Oily and salty on the tongue, with now quite a few ashes and citrus fruit, chalk, kelp and pebbles. Midpalate some vanilla, as well as white fruit arrive. The spiciness increases with mainly candied ginger, black pepper and licorice. Hint of anise. Pleasantly warm. In the finish, the peat leaves its mark with a long-lasting smokiness, a lot of salt and white fruit on the deathbed. Big Peat is a fun, affordable whisky and never disappoints.
