Gordon & Macphail is beyond introducing, I expect. This oldest of Scottish bottlers has a portfolio that knows no end. This Caperdonich from March 1972 was bottled under their Connoisseurs Choice label (thus 46%) in August 2011.
The nose is an instant classic. Deep sherry with all kinds of dark and dried fruits. Think raisins, apricots, both blue and yellow plums, to name but a few. Some pipe tobacco and chocolate, but also warm wild cherries. Barely any spices besides a pinch of cloves. A mild woodsmoke. Classic, like I said.
On the palate, it shows quite the body and spiciness. The cloves are upholstered with loads of licquorice and a touch of cinnamon. The fruit remains dry, prunes in the lead now, but a mildly bitter orange joins in. Hints of espresso. Sirop de Liège. The oak becomes louder, but never too loud.
The finish is spicy and very very long, but a bit drying in the end.
Sweet Caper that packs a punch. Around 170 EUR upon its release, but by now you will easily pay double that amount. Thanks, Jan!
