Caperdonich 40 Year Old 1972 for QV.ID

Today, Koen of Belgian retailer QVID, is celebrating. His newest bottling is on the market. When I got the sample, Koen would not even tell me what it was, trying to keep the secret complete until the release. Only 15 minutes ago did I find out that it was in fact a Caperdonich 40 Year Old 1972 and that only 65 bottles were released. I tasted it last Thursday and wrote this tasting note after assessing it blind.

What a grand nose! Honeysweet from both European and exotic fruit. Silky soft and delicious! Fresh on yellow apples, gooseberries, a basket full of mandarins and lemons, but also pineapple, kiwi, green banana and quince. Dark honey, but not too much. Not a trace of oak. Fruity is the keyword here. Very soft on the spices. A slight metallic touch, as from silver polish, gives it a nice depth.

It arrives graciously on the tongue, not bite but still prickling. Somewhat more spicy now. Ginger and liquorice. The cask did its job, without trying to dominate the spirit. Again very fruity, but a wonderful bitterness is working (and succeeding) to give it the perfect balance. I do not want to add any water to this.

The finish could have been somewhat longer, but it does not detract from the fun. Slightly bitter death.

A grand whisky. The nose especially is incredibly good. What a choice! We Belgians rightfully consider ourselves lucky. My bottled has been reserved. If you want yours, better hurry. Not cheap at 300 EUR, sure, but the holidays are coming.
