Clynelish from the 1990s are among the best in my book. Everything distilled between 1992 and 1997 are gems. This one from Duncan Taylor is among those. I do wonder if this is cask strength. Probably not. Less than 50% after less than 20 years would have meant very greedy angels indeed.
The nose is very sweet and offers mostly… err… banana split! Next to this summery ice cream I also get some stewed apples and pears, some rocks and gooseberries. Very fruit, mind you. After a few moments, some mandarin join in. The typical Clynelish waxiness is also present on the nose.
It all starts very juicy on the palate – again banana, mandarin, vanilla, apples – but then becomes candy-like sweet and suddenly a bit dry. The oak has put its foot down. It also becomes more herbal. Grasses. The fruit goes green: gooseberries and Reine Claude plums. All very fine.
The finish is cosy and long. On more of the same, by the way.
A touch atypical for Clynelish maybe, but very good allt he same. Just a tad too dry to be a stunner. Oh, and I just noticed this is already my 75th Clynelish (stop blowing your own horn, Mark).
