Concannon Irish Whiskey

Sorry, my first attempt. The whiskey reviewed is Concannon Irish Whiskey made in conjunction with Concannon vineyard and Cooley's distillery. This whiskey is matured in a Concannon wine barrel. By the color and citrus flavor I would guess a white wine barrel.

This whiskey was lightly fruity and refreshing when I tasted a sample in a local liquor store. I drank it in a few quick slurps and told the proprietor that it was nice but simplistic. A few days later I bought a bottle at a ten percent discount at a nearby Binny's (about $17 plus tax) in hopes of a steal of a deal. When I opened the bottle and poured into the obligatory glencairn, the aroma was notable on the ethanol and light on the scent. Disappointing. My wife (who enjoys redbreast neat) said it stung her tongue and she refused to finish her dram. She compared it to kerosene even though she never drinks that toxic liquid. Whew! What happened to nice and refreshing? Could this be different from that first Sample? One batch for sampling and others to sell? Was it the enticing ambiance of the liquor store? Guess you might think I'm suffering from buyer's remorse. Actually this is good for my cabinet. Don't want to waste an expensive, sipping Irish in an Irish coffee. And by the way, Petite Syrah is a red wine.

I often wonder how good of a seal is provided by the metal screw on cap. I also put this stuff in my coffee. I wrote this review without having tasted much whiskey and without having read many reviews.

Concannon is finished in Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah barrels. It is quite nice and a terrific value! I paid only US$20 for my bottle.
