Dun Bheagan is a label from Ian MacLeod Distillers, who also own Glengoyne and Tamdhu, but also market the following brands: Isle of Skye, Langs, Smokehead and The Six Isles. This Dallas Dhu is a single sherry butt that was put to sleep in 1981, two years before Diageo closed down the distillery for good.
The nose is sweet, while the sherry influence remains somewhat limited. Refill cask, maybe? Paraffin, cardboard, flowers, upholstered with a bit of raisins and milkchocolate. Not earth shattering.
Nicely creamy and a bit fiery on the palate, but again the flowery perfume is there, dominating. Slightly better than the nose predicted, but the sherry cannot save the day anymore. Wait, let me rephrase that. If it were not for the (albeit small) influence of the sherry cask, this would probably not have been a very pleasant whisky.
The finish is surprisingly long and spicy, on liquorice and gingerbread.
The nose was not very interesting, but the palate was okay. It is the finish that puts it up to 83 points in my book. Around 165 EUR. Thank you, Chris, for the very generous sample.
