Dalmore 30 Year Old 1973 Special Cask Finish

This Dalmore was distilled on 22 March 1973 and matured for three long decades on a Matusalem sherry cask from the famous Gonzalez Byass Bodega. It was bottled in 2003.

Ha, what a sweet nose! And punchy! Cherry pastry! Red berries, but also Turkish Delight, sniffing tobacco, almond shavings, Maraschino cherries, gooseberries. Praliné (that means nuts, right?). Very fruit, very enticing. A hint of oak gives it a nice deapth.

It is beautifully creamy on the palate. Reminds me a bit of portwine or rancio. The red fruit returns. Good body and power, despite the low ABV. Something dusty as well. Marmalade of cherries and prunes, softly spiced. Saffron and nutmeg. Some mint. Marzipan. Tannine rears its head towards the end.

The finish is medium long, a bit drying, but remains sweet. Only at the death does it turn slightly bitter.

A wonderfully balanced dessert dram with ambitions. Fantastic nose! If you can still find it, it will set you back at least 350 EUR, though.
