I first tasted this at a local whiskyfestival. I was not overly impressed, but wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt and took a sample home. This Dalmore was finished on Mucastel and Cabernet Sauvignon casks.
The nose is relatively dry. It has something that immediately brings carton to mind. Or fresh wooden planks. Then some dried apricots and caramel. No prickly, no spices. Rather flat. It takes about five minutes to become somewhat fruity, but then it does that well. Now I get some gingerbread, prunes and tobacco, even some cough syrup followed by sweet pears and candied sugar. Litchi and rhubarb.
On the palate, the oak comes first. Tannins, ginger and a pinch of white pepper. Something a little sourish (no doubt from the wine) that suppresses the fruit somewhat. It never truly recovers.
The finish is medium long on liquorice and pears.
Well, the nose turned out ok, but the rest leaves me rather cold.
