This Deanston has reached a respectable 20 years of age, was finished on Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at cask strength. This is only the 10th Deanston I try, but certainly the oldest.
I get a dry, sweet nose on dades, Seville oranges, hazelnuts and… oops, a bit of sulpher. Luckily it is not dominant. Far from it, even. Thyme, cloves and tobacco. A hint of plums and chocolate milk. Despite the light sulpher, this is actually very nice.
It is very creamy and sturdy on the palate. Sweet and sour on plums, pomelo, dades and chocolate. Immediately very spicy: cinnamon, cloves and loads of black pepper. Nuts return. Cappuccino.
The finish is very long, very piquant and drying.
It seems to me that the Deanston spirit was too delicate to deal with the active sherry cask. It became unbalanced. The sulpher is not helping either, of course. Around 150 EUR.
