Malting Floor

You are probably aware that I have a soft spot for new make. It took quite some doing, however, to get hold of some from Edradour. It is not commercially available, so I am very happy with my little bottle of new make. After all, Edradour suffers (still?) from a rather bad reputation, but since Andrew Symington from Signatory took over the distillery (in 2002), quite a bit has change. I had best kept some water at hand, for this has an ABV of 70%.
The nose is creamy and quite sweet, but most of all all about malted barley. I feel as if I am standing on a malting floor. Freshly baked raisin bread! Pears? Very clean. Something that reminds me of a stable, but a clean one. Does that make sense? Yes, this is very good indeed.
The high ABV makes it rather prickly, but it is far from unquaffable. I mean that in both strength and taste. No need for the water. It is not fruity, yet is has a nice sweetness. The malted barley returns. This is close to the grain, right? There is a little metallic edge in there as well, but far from disturbing.
It lingers very long in the finish, but that is no surprise.
Yes, lovely spirit with no offnotes at all. Andrew and his team know what they are doing (but I already knew that). Hopefully the whisky aficionados realize this as well and will return to Edradour, for the new stuff under Andrew’s stewardship is quite lovely indeed. Thanks, Timon.
