French Whisky and buying Whisky in France.

And here us a new request!

Since were all very helpful in the Pitlochry quest, I thought some of you might have some information about Whisky in France.

Next week I'm going on a short vacation to the Dordogne, France. Naturally I'll be drinking wine most of the time, but I would like an occasional dram. Now I could bring a small bottle with me from my own cabinet, but why not buy something there and bring it back home.

So I have two questions: where and what?

In France you have these XXL supermarkets, something we don't have in Holland. Can I get my Whisky there and do they have a good selection of single malts. Or is it just the average JW Black.

I've read about Glann ar Mor and Kornog, mostly on WiskyFun. But that guy is from France, so he could be favorable just a tiny bit. (no, I'm not suggesting anything, I quite like his website and get loads of usefull information from it)

What is your opinion of this distillery?

Is this Whisky also available in a super/inter/hypermarche?

Thanks again!

Hi ! in France lot of supermarkets have a good selection of scottish single malts from islands, speyside, highland etc... But Glann ar Mor and Kornog are very confidential. I don't taste these whiskies. They can be found in delicatessen in west of France and Britain...

Yes, larger supermarkets in France usually have very good selections of single malts and blends (from Scotland). If you drink brandy (cognac/Armagnac), then you are in luck. They have good selections of booze. Try checking out the chain Auchan. Good luck!

The Glann Armor/Kornog whiskies are definitely worth a try - I've liked the two or three I've tried. However, I suspect you won't find them in the supermarkets :)

So I'm in France now, camping. The weather isn't really nice, so it's a perfect time for a Whisky search. No Glen ar Mor or Kornog in the supermarche as you predicted. So I bought a Glenfiddich 15y Solera, which was a good deal for €30. The best price in Holland for this bottle is about €40.

So I'll be tasting it this afternoon!

Still in France and I stumbled upon a bottle of Lascaw 12y. Haven't bought it (yet).

The bottle says Single Malt Scotch Wisky, but is it from the Perigord Distillery in France. My French isn't to good, but the back label is mentioning truffles. I like truffles, but do I like it in my Whisky? And why is it scotch when the distillery is in France?

Plus, the bottles are numbered, so it's limited. It doesn't say much more on the packaging and google isn't helping either. No review to be found.

It's a very interesting bottle, but is it worth buying?

I have no knowledge of French Whisky single malt and am not sure if this will count. A friend has a bottle of michel couvreur. It is Scotch shipped to France where it's blended and stored in Burgundy casks. Sounds a bit crazy but it seems well regarded. I'm gonna try it next time I go over to see him.
