This Glen Keith was selected especially by the members of the Belgian whisky club The Finest Notes, of which my good friend Marc Castermans (aka Casmasjien, aka Whiskybudha) is a member. It was through him that I was able to add a bottle to my collection, but he also sent me a sample that enabled me to write these notes without having to open the bottle immediately. It is a Glen Keith from 1995 at cask strength, so I was expecting quite a bit of this. And it surpassed my expectations. Nice!
Immediately I get some tropical fruit on the nose. Pineapple and coconut. Loads of the former at the start. Them some fruit closer to home. Gooseberries. Nuts. Almonds, I would say. It has a slightly herbal side as well. Eucalyptus and hay. Very nice indeed. Hints of aniseed and a great bit of woodsmoke. But I would not be able to tell you if this was bourbon cask or sherry cask matured. It has a bit of both. Hmmm.
Great body, mouth coating and oily. The spices explode against the roof of your mouth. Think a truckload of pepper, some camphor and a bit of vanilla. Then the fruit kicks in, but less powerful than on the nose. Sweet malt. Very good. I am going to guess this was a bourbon cask.
The finish is pretty long, warm on woodsmoke.
Well, I suppose it is only logical. If a club of whisky enthusiasts is going to bottle a cask for their 10th anniversary, it goes without saying that they will choose a cask that stands out. The boys and girls of the Finest Notes certainly did that. Great cask selection!
