Since the takeover of Glen Moray by the French spirits giant La Martiniquaise (also known for Label 5 and Glen Turner), some more single malt is put out (although most of the 2,5 million litres per year is still destined for the blenders). Independent bottlers play an important role, like A.D. Rattray. We will be trying two of their releases H2H. Let us start with this 14 Year Old from 1998 and follow that up with a 20 Year Old from 1995.
The nose is rather light on mostly vanilla an sweet breakfast cereals. Frosties. Some hay and orchard fruit in the mix, a hint of white chocolate and pineapple. Caramel.
It is mildly oily and softly spiced. Surprisingly quaffable for this strength. Again whie fruit (apples, pears) and grain. Think white bread. A bit of hay, somewhat drying. Honey and vanilla are present. Hints of nuts. Becomes a bit bitter towards the end.
The finish is medium long, fruity and spicy, but it dies a bitter death because the oak becomes very loud suddenly.
Nice Glen Moray, but the oak is very dominant in the finish.
