My first ever sample of a Glen Ord courtesy of @wierdo. Many thanks! This is a Cadenhead's single cask offering, aged 12 years and at cask strength.
It has a very light, white wine colour and I have added about half a teaspoon of water to a 30 ml pour. Water definitely opens this one up but it is certainly approachable neat.
Nose - vanilla ice cream with wafers and tart fruit(s) compote, dusted with icing sugar - so quite a sweet nose!
Taste - lovely mouth-feel with more tart fruits (kiwi and a touch of gooseberry). Starts sweet and becomes a little more savoury and drying as it develops. More top quality vanilla ice-cream, homemade lemonade and some grassy, white wine notes.
Finish - Med with some light tannins and some of that tart fruit compote lingers on the back of the tongue after a while.
I feel I say this a lot when reviewing samples, but while this isn't my go-to style, it is very well-made and well-presented whisky and a very nice change of pace. Definitely a sweeter style but it does have some drier notes to help bring some balance. Cheers!
