This is one of those classic, old Glen Scotia. It was distilled in april 1966. Let us put that into context. It was the month in which the Russian Luna 10 circled the moon for the first time ever. Or the month in which Sophia Loren married Carlo Ponti, while the Rolling Stones released their album Aftermath. Closer to home, the 100th interland between Holland and Belgium took place, which we lost with 3-1. Anyway, it is an old distillate, bottled in January 1994, by Signatory.
Ooh, the nose is exceptional. Metal polish, oranges and rocks in the surf of a rough sea. After breathing it also offers banana and raisin in syrup. A bit bizarre, too, for it has this weird hint of lighter gas. Cinnamon and ginger complete the picture.
It is very oily and caresses the tongue. Immediately it turns drying and bitter, but thanks to the soft fruit, it stays upright. Liquorice and oranges are in the lead, salt and oak have supporting roles. But this one is getting no Oscar. Too sharp, almost astringent. Pity, for the nose was very promising.
The finish is again a battle between sweet and salt. Salt is victorious.
On the nose, this is surely a winner, but on the palate it cannot quite fulfil that promise. I got this one at one of Bert Bruyneel’s Wee Dram Master tastings. As far as I know, it can no longer be found.

Ahh totally jealous.. would love to try these weird and wonderful old Glen Scotias. I am intrigued by the nose on these. You got lighter fluid on this one, I got paint thinner on a much younger one. Can see myself getting a nice collection of Glen Scotias because I'm oddly fascinated by them. Cheers for the review. Video review of an old Glen Scotia some time? ;-)
