After the teens and tweens, we now get to the big boys. Gordon & Macphail bottled this Glenburgie from 1964 at the age of 46 years.
Ah, now that is the better nose. Creamy and sweet on dark fruit, toasted oak, light hints of coffee. Slightly salty farmers butter. Again a hint of cooked vegetables, but also marzipan and hazelnuts. It even contains a hint of smoke. Grand!
Soft and round on the palate, with again creamy butter, some salt, before exploding into dark and sweet: plums, raisins. Sherry cask? Must be, right? The whole is lined by a slight bitterness from the oak. Woodsmoke. This is great, despite the lack of complexity.
The finish is medium long on dark fruits and spices.
Young Glenburgie goes into blends like Ballantine’s and Teacher’s, but you will be hard pressed to find older Glenburgie. Glad I found this. Great whisky, dangerously quaffable.
