This first fill sherry hogshead of Glenlivet was bottled by Signatory for The Nectar from Belgium and has a wonderfully bronze color. For me, this was one of the highlights of the Spirits in the Sky festilval last November in Brussels.
Dark and sweet nose with a very herbal edge. Think camphor, eucalyptus and even a touch of rubber (without being disturbing). The fruit is both dark and dry. Think figs, dades and plums. Some cherries and a single blueberry. Brown sugar and chocolate. Cloves and a pinch of cinnamon. I like it.
Good body. Immediately quite peppery, warming your mouth. The sherry influence is instant and grand. Sweet on dark fruit with loads of spices like cloves, cinnamon and some black pepper. The fruit is now more cherries than berries, more figs than dades. But the whole remains dark and sweet with a hint of maple syrup and candid sugar. Some sweetened espresso with a bitter touch of the wood that gives the whole a nice balance.
The finish turns a bit more bitter, but that is the first fill sherry cask speaking no doubt.
Very nice Glenlivet that takes good advantage of a very active sherry cask. Still around for 55 to 60 EUR. Recommended!
