Fuji Gotenba distillery was founded in 1972 by Kirin Seagram Ltd. and is located at an altitude of 620 metres above sea level in Gotenba City, about 100 kilometres south-west of Tokyo. Currently the distillery belongs to Kirin Brewery Company Limited, which is owned by Kirin Holdings Company Ltd. Both malt and grain whiskies are produced in Fuji Gotenba. This 18-year old is the only single malt expression next to a 10-year old.
The nose is quite grassy and lightly malty. Hints of lemon, pineapple and apricots prevail, followed by a touch of honey. Overall this is a very light and clean nose.
The palate is light-bodied and a tad spicy, malty and rather grassy. Pineapples again make an appearance, followed by some nice honey notes. At the end tannic dryness manifests itself.
The finish is of medium length, lightly peppery and spicy.
This is a well balanced, light and clean single malt. Refreshing but not too interesting.
Nice review @Pierre_W. It was nice to see a review of this whisky! As far as I know, it is quite difficult to find outside of Japan. Personally, this has been one of my favourite drams for a long time. I agree that it is not too complex, but in my opinion a wonderful whisky.
