Have I already mentioned that I love Ledaig? And with each purchased bottle the infatuation only grows.
On my monthly whisky shop visit, the first thing I'll probably check is they have a new release of a young Ledaig on their shelves. The prices are usually fair and the unparalleled rough nature makes them the ideal candidates for your "bang for a buck".
And I was in luck again, for the Signatory BeLux (abbreviation for Belgium and Luxemburg) Tour, The Bonding Dram, Dim's Dram and Comptoir Des Vins (all whisky shops) ordered a joint bottling from Tobermory of the Unchill-filtered Collection range.
Economically priced at €42, I must have gone bats in the belfry if I hadn't picked it up.
Description: bottled by Signatory for the BeLux 2015 10 years of maturation in a refill sherry hogshead. Given that no colour was added, the amber colour from the cask is pretty remarkable.
Nose: what comes to mind is a rusting barge run aground on the rocks. Yes this nose is redolent of corroded steel dust, salt crusts and seaweed. But I also detect more familiar notes of leather, peat and raw dough, now wrapped in a sherry blanket, giving it a touch of pomegranate, and raisins.
Mouth: a rich full body, warm on delivery. This whisky manages to be both smokey with notes of tobacco leaves, warm ash and meaty with seasoned steak, bacon bbq sauce. Why not throw a few fruity elements in there?: dates, prunes.
Finish: medium with sherried chocolates.
Verdict: Ah another winner, ever wondered what the Indy Ledaig profile would look like with a fresh Sherry jacket? If you live in the Low Countries, guess no longer and buy this bottle.
