Ledaig Gordon&MacPhails Connoisseurs Choice 1994/2013

Ledaig. To be honest I had no clue about the bottles of Ledaig. I just knew they are from the Isle of Mull, produced in Tobermory at the same-named distillery. I got me a sample of the Gordon&MacPhails Connoisseurs Choice and wasn't expecting anything... seems this isn't a bad thing at all!

On the first smells I have to think of the Lowlands, to be preciser Glenkinchie 12yo from the Classic Malts of Scotland. The Ledaig also has this freshness, it is delicate but sweeter than the Glenkinchie. I am getting lots of fresh bright fruits, like blood oranges, lemon zest, grapefruits and kiwi. There is also vanilla on the nose.

The palate offers what the long maturation in refilled bourbon hogsheads is achieving. It is quite woody/oaky, with a nutty and peaty aroma although I don't know if they use peated barley for this. I am getting a tingle on the tongue with a slightly salty and peppery touch. This Ledaig is fresh with a light body - very quaffable.

The finish is quite long. It is bittersweet, nutty and a bit dryish.

Overall the wood influence is very present, especially on the palate. It is also not the most complex dram. But this isn't a bad thing for me, I really enjoyed it!

After all those big sherried or big peated or sherried AND peated whiskies, this is a straight forward, nicely matured dram in my opinion. With a pricetag under 50€ you can really give it a try, if you ask me.
