I’ll be honest, I did a double take when I looked at the label of this Miltonduff from the new Belgian bottler Double-V. Not because of the distillation or bottling date (5th October 2008 and 29th July 2020 respectively), but because of the ABV: 62.7%. Oh, boy. And that color… Must have been a very active PX cask.
The nose is very juicy and offers baked apples, blood oranges, yoghurt with pineapple, elderflower syrup, candied sugar and sultanas. Very fruity and no bite. Adding water gives it something of plastic, so not a good idea.
While the ABV is immediately present on the palate and the malt is also quite piquant from the spices, it can be enjoyed without adding water. But it’s very hard work to find any of the fruit now. Water can help, now. It makes it a tad fruity on sultanas and apples. And it adds some almond shavings.
The finish is piquant and herbal, but very long. Adding water makes it longer still!
I’m in dubio about this Miltonduff. It takes water well, but the nose suffers, only the palate and finish improve. But I happen to be that guy that enjoys whisky the most on the nose. Thanks for the sample, Jeroen.
