To be honest, those little ceramic decanters from Douglas Laing do nothing for me, but apparently there is a market for them, for they appear on a very regular basis. Anyway, the contents of this one is a 10 years old Mortlach, but that is about all the info you get. No vintage, no bottling date… The only thing the label reveals is that it is a 'Scintillatingly Silky Speyside Malt’.
Fresh as spring with a soft, but candy-like nose on pear drops, digestive biscuits and yeast. Hint of quince and agrum, gooseberries and ferns. Not a trace of the typical umami traits of Mortlach and in all honesty the nose is testing my patience.
The body leaves a lot to be desired. Quite watery. It is flat on the palate, very sweet and somewhat peppery, but with notes of yeast and oak. Either bottled to young or from a very tired cask.
The finish is fittingly short and nondescript.
Scintillatingly silky, my ass! This is sugar water.
