Originally the 14 years old Alexander’s Way – which refers to the fiendishly complicated process of 2.81x distilled that creates that typical umami spirit that Mortlach is known for – was only available as a travel retail expression, but today you can find it quite easily.
The nose is nicely accessible, sweet and sour on plums, raisins and orange juice with a hint of brown sugar and some green garden herbs. Gingerbread! It even has a pinch of salt, but it’s gone before you realize it.
Nicely oily on the palate. Full and almost creamy in fact. Some breakfast cereals with oranges, cedar wood, some earthy notes and wonderfully sweet from the fruity notes, but now I get that salty edge even more pronounced than on the nose. It does give this Mortlach extra depth, I feel.
The rather short finish offers more sweet raisins, but also honey and chewing tobacco.
Very charming and friendly priced Mortlach. Around 50 EUR.
