David Stirk recently gave his range a completely new look. Packaging is part of the deal, after all. This Mortlach was released in 2010 under the Exclusive Casks label, meaning it got a finish on a special cask. It was distilled on 2 November 1992 and after the regular maturation finished on a port hogshead. That explains the copper colour.
This nose is very aromatic. Candied sugar, vanilla and dried fruits in a lovely layer of port wine. The port is dominant, yes, but absolutely complimentary and not disturbing in any way. It works wonders.
The port also puts its foot down on the mouthcoating, creamy palate. It is honeysweet on all kinds of dark fruits (could it be from a sherry cask?) with a slightly sour touch from the fortified wine. But the whole is beautiful and does not need any water.
On the finish, my teeth almost collapse from my mouth because of the utter sweetness. Very spicy on nutmeg and cloves.
This one goes with dessert or coffee. I am a fan.
