While we are tasting Mortlach, let me continue with the new releases from Malts of Scotland. There is a Mortlach in there as well, the first for this German bottler.
Oh, this is a weird nose. Powerful, to be sure. Slightly sourish. A little bit umami. Hearty as if from roast beef, that pushes the sweet dark fruits to the background. Garden herbs. Broth. Hints of tea. Dark chocolate. Leather as well. Slightly smoky. Woodspice. A lot of oak. Almost sulphery, in fact. Yes, this is dirty sherry. Becomes sweeter as it breaths. Needs some air.
It is creamy and warming. Fiery. Peppers and nutmeg. Quite alcoholic, in factd. Some caramelized orange peel. Red fruit. Becomes sweeter still. Marzipan. Nuts and syrup. Nougat. Does not need water.
The finish is long, warm and spicy.
Good dirty sherry, if you know what I mean. But you need to make time for it. It is a diesel engine, so to speak. Leave it to breath. Available for around 90 EUR.

Tried a Mortlach at the pub a few weeks ago. It was not what I'd expected. Can't remember the year. 15? Not sure. Anyhow,I think the Mortlachs would be great at a tasting. Very unusual and challenging in a fun way. thanks for the review, Toshan Man! Your website is awesome.
