This is an older bottling from The Nectar of the Daily Drams. It was released in 2012 and is as good as untraceable nowadays. Let us find out if that is something to be sad about.
Surprising nose. The first thing that reaches my nostrils is varnish, followed by wood glue. Then the fruit is released. Think oranges and… nope, that is all the fruit I can find. Wait! Apple sauce. Sultantas. It just takes some patience. Nuts, maybe? Gingerbread? Laurel! Yep, no doubt about it. Laurel. I think this is the first whisky that reminds me of herb. Then something mustly/moldy. Sounds bad, but works in this case. It even leans towards OBE. Interesting.
This is mouth coating and almost astringent, if not for the syrupy sweetness of the first swallow. Phew! From bitter to fruit and back again. It is like the pears and oranges are fighting for supremacy. Leather? It does not need water.
I would not have minded for a longer finish, but I am not complaining either. Pepper and candied ginger round things out.
This is a Mortlach that tests your patience, I have to say. But as usual: patience is a virtue.
