Hepburn’s Choice is a label from Langside Distillers, which in turn is related to Hunter Laing & Co. It’s a very young and cut Mortlach. I picked up this sample during my visit to the whisky festival in Ghent. Very pale stuff.
Soft, but hardly outspoken nose on pear drops, stale beer and something candy-like. Some yeast and even something new make-y. But pretty boring at the same time.
Soft body, but again rather boring. Look, I love new make, but I find it unbecoming in a 7 years old whisky. Lots of pepper to give it some punch, but other than that, this is just colored water. What a disappointment.
The finish is the only plus. That lingers quite long and offers some sweetness with some pepper and a hint of oak.
Refill hogshead? How about ‘dead cask’? If Mortlach is the Beast of Dufftown, then this is it’s newborn putty. To be avoided in my book, especially considering the price of 60 EUR.
