The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is world famous, and has a huge membership, however I only really found out about this a month or so back. I was at the SMWS rooms in London as part of a tasting panel, and could not believe what was right in front of me! I wont explain what the SMWS is, most of you know already I’m sure!
Anyway after the tasting panel myself and the other panellists went into the bar and sampled this very dram. Entitled Sherry Fusion, this Mortlach malt has spent its 14 years ageing in a 1st fill sherry butt, and the 551 bottles have been bottled at cask strength of 56.3%. It has a dark rusty colour, with a reddish hint (at least in my eyes), and has a fantastic aroma to it. Personally I think it has almost a meaty smell to it, but it also feels quite light and fruity after a few smells.
The taste though is very powerful and strong, with the meatiness that was around in the nose coming through a bit more. A bit of fruit is there as well, but it tastes very dark, I cant think of a better way to describe it! The finish lingers on, and leaves a sweet taste on your tongue for a good time after the whisky glides down your throat!
This was an excellent introduction to SMWS for me, it’s not made me get a membership just yet but by the end of the bottle I may change my mind!
