The Cask Strength Collection contains a series of single malts that vary in age from 21 to 26 years. They are (obviously) bottled at cask strength, ranging from 50 to 65% ABV. The only exception is this 1987, bottled at a drinking strength of 43%.
Sweet nose on yellow fruit (apricots, lemon, grapefruit), marshmallows and wine gums. Very sweet indeed. A little too much like candy, if you get my meaning. Mild spices. Some honey as well. Loads of floral elements such as dandelions. Touch of menthol.
Despite the modest ABV, this one has a nice body. Immediately very fruity and spicy on the palate. Some pepper, nutmeg and ginger support the yellow fruit. Vanilla appears. Touch of marzipan. The citrus is now clearly grapefruit with a light bitterness.
Medium long, bittersweet finish in which the spices have the final say.
Nice, accessible whisky from New-Zealand, that hides its age well. Tastes fairly young, in fact, while it really is not.
