This is my final Yoichi sample, a 20 Year Old from 1991. It matured in warehouse 15 (many a good cask came from there), in a new oak cask.

The prickly nose contains peat and silt, but it is the sweetness that is victorious here. Oranges and lemon, stone fruits (apricots and even some mango) and then some vanilla and earth. But also roasted almonds and sweet & sour sauce! Caramel. Chocolate. Coconut. It keeps developing. Complex little animal.

Fiery and creamy on the palate with a big kick from both the spices and the high alcohol percentage. The citrus from the nose is joined by grapefruit. Some menthol. Then the peat returns. It goes up and down. The second sip offers nuts and chocolate. What a balance.

The finish is long, warm and elegant.

The best Yoichi that I have tried so far. And I know where a bottle can still be had for around 200 EUR. Think I will grab it.

Since I was really impressed by the much more expensive 18 YO, I went looking all over town for a bottle of this and only found one bar to sample it. Your review nailed it - sweet and sour. I will stick with Glenfarclas 17 and Aberlour 12 as my two favorite sherry monsters, and will no longer be searching for a bottle of this. The bartender even told me that it is very rarely requested.

Thanks for the kind words. When you tried it at the bar, was it expensive?

It was $16.50 US plus my usual generous tip for a 1.5 oounce serving. Since it was sampled yesterday, this was easy to remember. The sourness ruined it for me wanting to buy a bottle. I also sampled Dalmore Cigar Malt right after this one for $21 US plus generous tip for 1 ounce. Awesome malt, but not worth $97 US for a whole bottle in my area. I find that all of these reviews are more dependable and cheaper than these bar samplings that I partake in.

That's a good bar price for the Yoichi. The Cigar Malt is overpriced to me, although I did like a glass I had at the Stillhouse in Oregon City. It's full of fake caramel coloring/flavoring, so it's hard for me to take it seriously. Glad you are still liking the Farc 17, MisterDigger.

Rigmorole: My next goal is to get a bottle of Farc 12 in the blue box. That one disappears off the shelf as soon as the store restocks them, so I will probably have to call and reserve a bottle. Fast sales like this are another good sign of a winner. So far, I only hate the Farc 10. As you can see, I have won out over what the doctor wanted in taking it ALL away for 6 months to a year. By the way, why did you call this Glendronach 15 a Yoichi?
