The Distiller’s Edition, which appears yearly, is a series of single malts from Diageo that got a second maturation on a special cask. In the case of this Oban, it was a Montilla Fino Sherry cask. Montilla is a wine region around Cordoba in Spain. The nose is nicely balanced by the typical maritime elements of Oban against the fruity notes. A salty edge is counter footed by oranges, apricots, banana, pistachio nuts and honey. Very inviting. It is nicely oily and sweet. Surprising soft on the spice front (a bit of ginger and nutmeg) with mostly room for dried oranges and apricots. A hint of sea salt and sniffing tobacco. Trace of smoke. The finish was short to medium with a mildly drying effect. This is one of the sweetest Oban I have ever tried, while the typical coastal character stayed upright.
