Last year A.D. Rattray, independent bottler with HQ in Glasgow, released two sister casks from this Speysider: #100006 en #100007, both of them bourbon casks. I was able to secure a sample of the first one.
The nose is rather flat, actually. Lime and hazelnuts, cold coffee and some Turkish Delight but little else. Fresh, but simple.
Nicely oily and sweet on the palate, but also fairly spicy. Think cloves and lots of pepper, caramelized ginger and liquorice. The fruit is now of the yellow and candied variety with some nuts and even a hint of chocolate. Mocha? Vanilla ice cream? Yet it has that soapy edge that I truly do not like. As if I have some shampoo in my mouth.
The finish is medium long, sweet and spicy, but the soapiness does not dissipate.
Not my favorite Strathisla, at all. Much too soapy.
