This is only my fourth Strathmill (which means ‘big mill in the valley’). Of the first three, only one was really nice, the 35 Year Old from A.D. Rattray, that is being sold for around 120 EUR. Let us see if this Archives (which is around 50 EUR more expensive) can fascinate.
Yep, the nose is bulls eye! Very fruity and creamy on oranges and honey. A touch of cinnamon. Pineapple on the grill, baked banana, sprinkled with some orange juice. A couple of mint twigs. This is very good indeed!
On the palate, unfortunately I might add, it turns slightly bitter. Not from the wood. Rather grapefruit or a lime tea bag that has been left in the cup too long. A lot of ginger and a whiff of white pepper. Slightly creamy, but less than on the nose. Having said that, it remains very good with a round mouthfeel.
The finish is fairly long on the same aromas. A lot of citrus and spices. Bittersweet death.
A wonderful Strathmill, to say the least, but with a cost of about 170 EUR somewhat expensive.
