Talisker Bottle Codes

@A'bunadhman just commented about opening a great bottle of Talisker. My last bottle was the worst Talisker 10yo I have yet come across. Which is very disheartening. It is bland and uninspiring with a bit more of a sherry influence then I am use to in Talisker 10yo. Perhaps it was too heavily dosed with e150a? It is the darkest Talisker 10yo I have owned.

On to the codes

I found the code on the back of the bottle near the bottom in super fine etching: L3092CM000; and then a second line below that: 01880134. I have no idea with the numbers actually mean. L3 could be 2013 while 092 could be the day of the year. I did buy this bottle in October of 2013. So it could be April 2nd of 2013. But that is just a guess that seems to make sense.

I have a bottle of 25yo Talisker from 2005 (clearly labeled) that has a code, also on the back, but just above the back label. It reads: L5245CM000, and the second line is 03295315. So the 245th day of 2005 is September 2nd – if my guess holds up.

Finally, I have a 200mL minature set of Talisker 10yo, 18yo, and the Distillers Edition TD-S: 5HT Bottled in 2005, Distilled in 1992. Since the Distillers edition clearly states it is bottled in 2005 my assumption is that both the 10yo and the 18yo were also bottled in 2005. They are all great by the way.

The codes for these are: 10yo: L5211CR000 second line 00483671 18yo: L5202CR000 second line 00410056 Distillers Edition: L5222CR000 second line 00573861

So the L5 does seem to indicate 2005 for the 200mL set of three and the 25yo from 2005.

Anyone care to contribute a code and the year you bought it? And maybe your thoughts on that bottle?

Doing some digging around, I found similar threads like yours, @Nock. This is the best answer I found:

"I recently wrote Diageo asking about their various codes. A representative responded very quickly and very nicely explained about the code on the newer bottles, but the individual was not knowledgeable about the older codes, such as the "LLJ" codes. For the newer codes I was informed:

'LxxxxCM000 xxxxxxxx (where "x" represents a number). The first digit indicates the year the product was bottled and the next three indicate the day (out of 365). The subsequent numbers indicate the plant and time it was bottled. For instance, your bottle of Talisker 18 yo with the lot code L4322CM000 04750887 would have been bottled on the 322nd day (Nov. 17) of 2004.'"

I can't help with my own bottle of Talisker, I finished it at my sisters and didn't think to look at the code at the time.

@Nock: Your right! there is a code, bottom back of the Talisker and it is very fine etching, indeed. A flashlight from behind the code makes it decipherable...

L3038CM00

00727465

It is a lovely 'drop'!

Slainte!
