This is a small batch bottling of only 5,000 bottles. Matured first in ex-Bourbon casks, then finished in Sauterne wine casks. This is the first time this has ever been done with an Irish Whiskey. This is a 1991 vintage at 21 yr and it seems they are planning a 25 and 30 year old release.
For those familiar with Whisky Blender you can already imagine what this wide shouldered bottle looks like.
Nose: The first thing you get is a slap in the face of mouldy dust sheets and paint thinners. Terrible, however this fades very quickly into something pleasant and interesting. Slight smoke, pears, citrus, apricots, caramel. I have never whiffed a nose that starts so bad but with air gets so good.
Palate: the taste is more rounded than the nose. Sweet tingle on tongue, creamy honey, slightly smokey, very slight salt, citrus, fruity, interesting.
Finish: medium to long and smooth creamy fruits linger.
It is very interesting a I for one will keep an eye on Teeling going forwards.
