The first edition of the Teeling Pot Still in the Wonders of Wood series was matured on Chinkapin Oak and appealed to me, but I must confess that I am very much looking forward to this second edition that matured on Virgin Portuguese Oak.
Sweet and quite spicy, indicating the unmalted barley in the mix, typical of a pot of still whiskey. Multigrain bread, bay leaves, rosemary and new saddlebags. Then follow sultanas, a hint of apricots and gooseberries.
Nice and oily. The fruit of the nose returns, but has a hard time against the fierce spiciness that translates to rosemary, a lot of pepper, cocoa and garden herbs. The touch of leather I had on the nose does not return, but is replaced by a creamy touch like milk chocolate... or chocolate milk. Chewing tobacco. Figs and red apples appear midpalate. Hearty whiskey, though!
In the medium finish, the sultanas return, but it remains spicy to the bitter end, leaving the mouth relatively dry.
Tasty, but a tad too spicy for my liking. And of course this sample was also provided to me by Mr Teeling Belgium. Thanks, Benny.
