Firstly this is a review of the newer 46.3% unchillfiltered version of Tobermory 10 year, not the bargain supermarket one most Britons are familiar with.
Nose: Malty with lots of citrus, mostly lemon and some lime. Vanilla with a bit of saltiness and sea air.
Palette: Very similar to the nose. The malt has more of "grassy" flavour and the lemon is toned down.
Body: Surprisingly thick for a ten year old.
Finish: A big hit of salt and very drying. Not the longest lasting, but longer than any other ten year I've tried.
I like the new bottle design. The cork stopper features the Isle of Mull and the seal is a drawing of Tobermory village. The thick dark green bottle is also an eye grabber.
Overall I'm impressed by this bottling, and would purchase it again. For any Oban fans, the reason for this reviews title "Smart buyers' Oban" is because I feel the two are very similar. Both are light seaside whiskeys, but the Tobermory is IMO much more complex and is priced at $64 whereas Oban 14 is a ridiculous $110.
Don't pass this up just because of the low age or past bottling.
