The relatively new Discovery series from Gordon & Macphail presents young, affordable entry-level malts. This Tomatin was distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2018 at drinking strength. It all starts a bit yeasty on the nose, I have to say. Although there is fruit – think melon, unripe banana and some baked apples – this nose is still dominated by freshly cooked pasta and peanuts. A bit strange, to say the least. The body is very light. Baked apples return, as well as some banana and nuts. Suddenly becomes very creamy, which I like. Something like coconut milk and vanilla custard appear. Canned pineapple. Soft wood herbs that embellish the whole (and it is necessary). In the rather short finish I get peanuts again, supplemented with milk chocolate. A 'small' and young Tomatin at a friendly price (about 50 EUR). Thanks to Top Malts for the sample.
