This Tomatin was a gift from a friend. It was distilled in 1977 (the year Star Wars premiered) and bottled in 1998. There is hardly any OBE discernable here, even though it has been held captive in the bottle for almost 14 years.
On the nose, however, I do get quite a few dusty associations, but aside from that, it is very fruity. Pineapple and overripe peaches, some brésilienne nuts and brown banana? A hint of buttermilk is something of a party pooper. Caramel candy like Werther’s Original make up for it.
Unfortunately, the whisky is very, very watery. Quite flat, indeed. Yes, there is some fruit, sure. But also a lot of bitterness. Some spices try to save the day, but to no avail.
The finish is fairly long and a combination of bitter and salt. Not really that good, I must say.
This was once a nice Tomatin, I am sure. But those days are long gone. Could it be due to the fact that this whisky has been sitting in the bottle for all those years, knowing that only a few drams were left? Probably. Good thing I finished it off, then.
