Tomatin Cù Bòcan gets its name from the legend of a spectral dog, Cù Bòcan, who has haunted the Highland village for many years. Tale tells that the dog dissolved as smoke over the moorlands when a distillery worker tried to touch it. That's why this dram's been peated to 15 ppm.
Matured in a mix of virgin oak, bourbon and sherry casks. Unfortunately the story is way much better than the actual whisky.
The smoke is very light and the dram isn't a complex one. Not that complexity should be a major factor on how good a whisky is but in this case Cù Bòcan lacks too much in every area.
The Hound of the Baskervilles, pardon, of Highland howls too lightly.
Nose: Citrus fruits and flowers clash lightly. Sharp and gingery, oaky.
Taste: Finally there's some smoke but it falls behind. Nutty and spicy with hints of honey.
Finish: Okay when it comes to length but lacks character. Wee smoke and fresh oak.
Balance: Non-complex, shows the young age too much.
