@Nolinske Yeah, it's not a lot. I'm kind of surprised that they don't have tiered system where you can bring in more the longer you are out of country.

Get a few wine diapers and pack them it your check in bags. If you have the bottles in your carry on and you have to fly back after the cruise, airpot security will take them because the are over three ounces. My duty free bottle almost got taken coming back from Ireland on my connecting fly, however I was able to check it last minute. If you don't have to fly r have no connecting flights you will be fine. Two bottles a person was the limit last September if I remember correctly.

I wish I would have read that link before I posted and traveled. Either way, two bottles was the limit based on my wife's rules! Getting her to take two more bottles for me would have been asking a lot. Getting home with a case would be nothing short of a miracle.

@Nolinske A couple of questions for you. What line are you travelling on? and Where are you going? Many of the cruise ships carry limited whiskies and very rarely do they carry highend. If you are going to the Islands, the drink of choice is rum. If you buy off the ship, be prepared to give it up when you board. You'll get it back on your last night. Sometimes, on longer cruises (7 to 10) there could be representatives from companies pushing their products (in our case, it was grey goose and seagrams). You can get great deals. We could have bought 4 crown royal for $55.00. Didn't because it was over our custom limit. Also, just so you know alcohol is not the only item that you can get bargains on. If your significant other is into purses, jewelry. and perfume, then be forwarned....they have all the bases covered...) If you have sea days the stores open early and stay open late...Have fun on your cruise

@PeterG7 haha thanks and I know how the stores are open any time u are willing to spend money :) we are on a 7-day cruise to cayman, Jamaica and Cozumel on the carnival conquest and I'm a fan of rum as well so ill probably just pick that up this trip since I remember last time the crown was well priced but that was as "high end" as I really remember besides the Johnny walkers

I was actually interested to read that link being that I just went through a stressful two days on my way back from Japan hoping that my purchases would not be taxed, broken, confiscated, etc. I'll probably put together a blog posting about it soon (just got back to the states at 1:30 this morning), but long story short, I ended up bringing in multiple bottles with a total value written on the back of my customs delcaration form - no mention of number of bottles. Having read that link, I'm not sure if I'm lucky or what but there was no mention of amount of alcohol on the declaration form, just that anything over $800 was subject to duty.

A friend brought 21 bottles back to the USA from Scotland splitting the load between himself and his wife. Key is to declare up front everything. Look them in the eye, say you like whisky. They can charge whatever fees but I've never heard of it.

I will be going on a cruise soon, and looking at the customs site I am not clear on how much liquid gold I will be able to bring into the US before I have to pay duty on it? I'm not sure duty is the right term, but I hope everyone understands what I'm referring to.
